Baltimore Oyster Recovery is “Amazing!” according to Baltimore Sun Article
“In my four years as the Choptank Riverkeeper, I have never seen spatfall density like there is in Harris Creek,” said Choptank Riverkeeper Drew Koslow.
For those of you who do not know, “spatfall” are oyster offspring. And dense spatfall in the Choptank River is great news for the state’s oyster recovery efforts. The Choptank River is the focus of both Maryland and federal oyster recovery efforts in the Chesapeake Bay.
This is all part of President Barack Obama’s 2009 executive order, which calls for reviving oyster populations in 10 Maryland water ways by 2025. Maryland waterways, like the Choptank River, once overflowed with oysters. Then, as a result of disease, pollution, and over-harvesting, the oyster population experienced a steep decline.
In 2012, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources began expanding oyster bars, seeding them with baby oysters, or spat, produced in a state hatchery. State, federal, and nonprofit groups placed 634 million spat in Maryland’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay last year.
So what is the state of the oyster population today?
“You literally couldn’t take a step without walking on oysters,” said Koslow in regards to the Choptank River.
