New Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement
Earlier in June, six states came together to make a big change towards improving the future of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The Bay, whose health has been on the decline in recent years, is now looking at a future of reduced nutrient and sediment build-up, along with healthier aquatic flora and fauna. The Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement has been signed by representatives from watershed states, namely, Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and New York. Maryland’s representative was Governor Martin O’Malley. This interstate cooperation is good news for those who have long been in support of restoring the Chesapeake Bay to its historical health and abundance. The Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement lays out ten main goals that each of the signing states will endeavor to meet approximately within the next ten years. While many of these goals pertain to actions that those in the watershed can take to reduce their negative impacts on the Chesapeake Bay, others discuss the Bay itself and the wildlife within it. One of these goals is the Sustainable Fisheries goal, which is geared towards cutting back on overfishing so that all varieties of fish, including shellfish, are able to have healthy populations living in the Chesapeake Bay at any given time. The Vital Habitats goal has a similar mission; it states that the signing states will endeavor to make the Bay a more habitable place for aquatic life. The Water Quality goal will be one of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement’s most essential elements, as improving water quality will not only help aquatic flora and fauna thrive in the Bay, but also will be beneficial towards human health. A healthier, more sustainable Bay means that the many advantages the Chesapeake Bay brings us, from recreation to industry to delicious seafood, will be around for years to come.
