And now for a little Valentine’s Day history. The first officially celebrated Valentine’s Day was on February 14th, in the year 496. Pope Gelasius I stripped the holiday of its former pagan association (which goes back to the Roman fertility festival of Lupercalia) and declared the day a Christian feast day in honor of St. Valentine. Which St. Valentine is debatable. The most likely is a priest by the name of St. Valentine who incurred the wrath of (and was put to death by) Roman emperor Claudius around the year 270 for refusing to renounce his religion, Christianity. However, there are other versions of the story, including that St. Valentine was jailed by Claudius and fell in love with the daughter of the jailer, sending her a letter just prior to his execution signed “from your Valentine.”
History may never know for sure, but it is known that English writer Chaucer was the first to associate Valentine’s Day with the idea of love, when he wrote a poem commemorating the engagement of Richard II and Anne of Bohemia. By the 18th century, the English were exchanging gifts and cards on Valentine’s Day and the tradition caught on in America in the 1850’s when Esther A. Howland began mass producing Valentine’s Day cards.
