Fun Easter Facts

With Easter coming up, we thought we’d share a couple fun Easter facts that you might not have known!

The Tallest Egg

The tallest chocolate Easter egg was made in Italy in 2011. It was 34 feet tall and weighed nearly 16,000 pounds!

Where did the Easter Bunny come from?

To tell the story of the Easter bunny, you also have to tell the story of the word Easter itself. The word Easter was derived from the Germanic goddess Eostre. She was the Mother Goddess of the pagan Anglo-Saxons of Northern Europe, and also the goddess of the growing light of spring. As such, the pagans celebrated the coming of spring with a festival in tribute to Eostre. The festival was named Ostara, and its date was usually close to the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Christ. As Christianity spread throughout Europe, the name of the festival slowly changed from Ostara to Easter.

So where does the bunny fit in? The concept of the bunny stems from the fact that the hare was the spirit animal/animal symbol of Eostre. The Easter bunny as a character began in Germany, where he was basically an equivalent of Santa Claus for spring, leaving treats for kids. “He was known as Osterhase,” according to Daily Kos. “The children would build a nest for him to leave their eggs in. This eventually become our modern Easter basket.”
