American Pharoah goes for the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes
American Pharoah is the decided favorite, having beat every horse in the race at some point in the last year. His odds currently sit at 5-7, the next closest being Frosted at 6-1. After starting from the 16th gate in the Kentucky Derby and the 1st gate in the Preakness, American Pharoah has drawn the number 5 gate at the Belmont Stakes, which is generally considered to be a favorable position. His win in the Preakness was especially significant considering only one horse had won the race from gate number 1 since 1961.
American Pharoah’s trainer is the legendary Bob Barrfet, who has 4 Kentucky Derbies, 6 Preakness States, and 1 Belmont Stakes under his belt. He’s owned by Ahmed Zayat, who got his first wins in the Triple Crown series this year.
His jockey is Victor Espinzoa, who has won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness 3 times each. Twice he entered the Belmont Stakes with the opportunity to win the Triple Crown, but both times he’s come up short. Tomorrow he’ll be the first jockey in history to enter the Belmont Stakes with a third chance to win the Triple Crown. The third time certainly would be quite the charm for Espinoza.
American Pharoah’s odds are currently 5-7, and he will face 7 other horses and the 1 ½ mile race.
