How Eating Fish Can Improve Your Memory
We’ve all heard the term brain food used in referring to fish, but why do we say that anyway? It turns out, eating fish may help your brain better retain brain cells in the area of the brain which is responsible for short-term memory.
Studies have found a relationship between a diet that regularly contains fish with a reduced risk of Alzheimers, a disease that slowly deteriorates the memory. The active ingredient in fish that helps reduce this risk is believed to be omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in many, but not all, fish. A 2011 study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine found that, “people who ate baked or broiled fish at least weekly and didn’t lose brain cells were much less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease or mild mental impairment.” Fried fish, however, did not have the same effect. The study showed that only 3% of people who ate fish weekly and didn’t lose brain cells developed Alzheimer’s or a similar mental impairment, while 47% of people who didn’t eat fish developed Alzheimer’s or a similar impairment. The study involved 163 people and took place over the course of 7 years.
The kinds of fish that contain omega-3 fatty acids are cold-water fish including halibut, mackeral, salmon, trout, and tuna. So give your brain a hand and eat some fish! Your memory will thank you for it.
